Around twenty years ago, the question of space representation and the constitution of a particular place have been the backbone of my artistic production. If, at first, the existing space between the sky and the mountain was the main focus of my drawings, engravings and paintings, with time this perspective started shifting and made the sky the scene protagonist with the mountains as a solid, robust base to anchor the celestial movements. These representations were constructions usually made from a distance, an observation of the landscape from a broader relationship with the surroundings, being it the city of Rio de Janeiro, at the escarpments of the Basque Country or in the middle of the Chapada dos Veadeiros.

In the years that passed, a new gaze has settled, one that got closer to the ground, to the tiny little details, registering each event in lines, stains, and dots. The series "projeto para desenhar o chão" (project to draw the ground) took about two years and concluded when I went through the same routes from the journeys high up, from inside a plane, recurring to visual memory only. Walking and being part of the landscape as I moved became the point of interest in these new representations, and then choosing the bottom of the river was an almost obvious path to take. During two seasons spent in Cavalcante, countryside of the state of Goiás, the Rio das Almas, which crosses the town, caught my attention and became the scenery of three new series of drawings: the Rio das Almas, Cavalcante GO series, which goes beyond the observation and the representation of what is real. In them, water takes over the sky in the construction of reflections and duplicate things and duplicating the world, surrounding us in a unique, dreamlike experience.

Looking at the ground under the river’s water, I understood its own beauty: a kind of active inner beauty. Matter seen through the water illuminated by the sun conveys an elusive impression where imagination is always in danger, always in risk of dissipating in next movement of the water. The fragility and delicacy of this contemplation awakens the necessity to eternalize this moment and I tried to materialize them in colors and pigments, only accessing the memory of that sensation, without recurring to other photographic or written records, and thus these images came to be. These are sixty drawings in dry pastel on paper, most of them in the 50x50cm format, divided in three series: the first, with twenty-five drawings, made in 2018, in the second, "águas profundas", with twenty-five drawings made in 2019 and the last, "distante do rio", with ten drawings, in 2020.
